Silver Hallmarks

In the Netherlands, two bodies are charged with implementing the Waarborg act; Waarborg Holland in Gouda and Edelmetaal Waarborg Nederland in Joure. They are engaged in the examination and approval of precious metal objects. Both carry their own labels.

The Waarborg act was created by the Minister of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy with the following objectives:
1. Protecting the consumer against fraud;
2. Protecting companies against unfair competition.

Silver jewellery must always be provided with a hallmark in the Netherlands. The only exception to the rule is jewellery under 8 grams. Which hallmark comes in the piece of jewellery depends on the purity of the item.

With a purity of 925 out of 1000 (92.5% pure silver) and higher, the hallmark for first grade silver or sterling silver is applied.

With a purity of 835 out of 1000 (83.5% pure silver) and higher, the hallmark for second grade silver is applied.

Below is a complete table with all types of hallmarks that are used for silver jewellery and objects.

An object or piece of jewellery with a silver purity of less than 80% may not be called silver in the Netherlands. This is described in the Waarborg act.

All our jewellery is made of sterling silver. All jewellery, if heavier then 8 grams, is provided with one of the two hallmarks.
In most of our jewellery, the hallmark can be found in the eyelet, directly behind the lock or on one of the end loops.
